TRC Hearings Wrap Up in Halifax
Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission finished it’s third national event here in Halifax last week.
Many of the Residential School survivors I spoke with thought the event was a positive experience. They welcomed the opportunity to share their stories in order to help create an historical record of the horrible legacy that the Residential School system wrought on First Nations People across Canada.
I was pleased to see so many students from schools around Halifax who were there to learn about the Residential School experience.

A Tribute to Nora
The organizers of the event scheduled an evening to honour Nora Bernard, my friend and client who played a key role in the National Residential Schools Class Action settlement.
I was humbled to be invited to sit with Nora’s family and to participate in the honouring ceremony. Nora’s daughter Leanna asked me to join her on stage to share a few words about Nora’s accomplishments. Nora changed the lives of thousands of Residential School Survivors. She changed my life as well. She made we realize the power that a single person can have and what a privilege we lawyers have to help people like Nora, who want to make the world a better place.
I am proud to have called Nora my friend.
